The Engineering Behind Volcano Electric EC Fan Motors A Breakdown of the Full 0.4–22kW Range
When selecting an EC fan motor the specification sheet is only part of the picture. The more useful question is whether the manufacturer can build the motor you actually need across different power levels operating conditions and control requirements.
Volcano Electric’s EC fan motor range covers 0.4kW to 22kW through three different motor structures and seven series. Looking at how those structures are used and where their respective limits lie gives a clearer picture of the engineering behind the range.

- One product family covering 0.4kW to 22kW
A single motor structure cannot efficiently cover the entire power range. Low medium and high-power applications place different demands on the motor’s electromagnetic design cooling dimensions and mechanical construction.
Volcano Electric uses three structures across seven series.
Inner rotor — HSE140 and HSE160: 0.4kW to 3.7kW IP66
The rotor sits in the center with the stator windings positioned against the housing. This arrangement provides a direct path for heat to move outward through the housing. It is also suitable for applications requiring low-speed torque and a high ingress-protection rating.
Disc-type — HSE300 and HSE370: 4.5kW to 22kW IP66
The rotor and stator use a large-diameter flat configuration. Instead of extending the motor mainly in the axial direction the design uses diameter to increase torque. This makes the structure suitable for the higher-power end of the EC motor range.
Outer rotor — HSE102 HSE138 and HSE188: 0.4kW to 5.5kW IP54/IP55
The rotor forms the outer shell and rotates around the stationary stator. The impeller can be mounted directly to the rotor resulting in a compact motor with a short axial length.
Using these three structures allows Volcano Electric to cover different operating requirements rather than forcing one motor architecture across the entire range.
- Where high power becomes difficult 22kW and 89N·m
The upper end of the range is where motor design becomes considerably more demanding.
Volcano Electric’s highest-power model is the HSE-PM38H2200-370N26-FB5 rated at 22kW 2650rpm and 80N·m. The highest-rated torque in the range is 89N·m delivered by the HSE-PM38H900-370N09-FB5 at 9kW and 960rpm. Both models belong to the disc-type HSE370 series.
The limitations of the three structures become easier to see at higher power.
With an outer-rotor motor the windings are located at the center of the motor. Heat must cross the air gap and then pass through the rotating rotor shell before reaching the surrounding air. As power increases the amount of heat that needs to be removed also increases. Cooling eventually becomes the limiting factor which is why outer-rotor EC motors generally remain in the single-digit-kilowatt range.
An inner-rotor motor has a more direct cooling path because the windings are positioned against the housing. Its limitation is different. As more torque is required the motor tends to become longer in the axial direction. Volcano Electric’s inner-rotor range reaches 3.7kW with the HSE160.
The disc-type structure takes a different approach. Its large diameter increases torque capacity while keeping the motor relatively short axially. The larger structure also provides more surface area for heat dissipation. At the same time however the design places greater demands on electromagnetic design mechanical strength cooling and dynamic balancing.
The HSE300 and HSE370 use this structure to reach 22kW.
There is another useful point in the specifications maximum power and maximum torque do not occur on the same model. The 22kW model is rated at 80N·m while the 9kW/960rpm model reaches 89N·m.
The relationship is straightforward
Torque = 9550 × power kW ÷ speed rpm
At a given power level reducing speed increases torque. That makes the 9kW/960rpm model relevant to applications where low-speed high-torque operation matters. It is not simply a smaller version of the 22kW model the two models serve different operating requirements.
- IP66 protection for demanding washdown environments
Ingress protection may look like a standard specification but it becomes important when the motor is exposed to regular washing or water jets.
Volcano Electric’s HSE140 and HSE160 inner-rotor motors are rated IP66. The disc-type HSE300 and HSE370 are also rated IP66.
This rating is particularly relevant in environments such as livestock facilities cold-chain operations and food processing where equipment may be washed down as part of routine operation.
Under IEC 60529 IP66 testing uses a powerful water jet. The referenced test uses a 12.5mm nozzle at approximately 100L/min. By comparison the IP55 test uses a 6.3mm nozzle at approximately 12.5L/min.
For motors operating in washdown environments protection at the terminal box shaft-end seal and end-cap joints is therefore important. If water enters the motor insulation resistance can deteriorate and electrical failure may occur later rather than immediately after washing.
Achieving IP66 with an inner-rotor design also requires attention to the motor’s overall sealing and mechanical construction. Volcano Electric’s inner-rotor HSE140 and HSE160 provide an IP66 option for applications where this level of protection is required.
- IE5 efficiency across the range
Motor efficiency matters most when a fan operates for long periods. Industrial ventilation livestock ventilation cooling and other fan applications can involve thousands of operating hours each year.
Volcano Electric’s EC fan motors are rated IE5 across the range. IE5 is above IE4 and IE3 in the efficiency classification system.
EC motors use permanent-magnet synchronous motor technology. The rotor field is produced by permanent magnets rather than by induced rotor current avoiding the rotor copper losses associated with conventional induction-motor operation.
For a continuously operating fan even a relatively small difference in efficiency can accumulate over a long operating period. That is why efficiency should be considered together with the motor’s operating hours and load profile rather than treated as an isolated specification.
In Volcano Electric’s product range IE5 is applied across the EC fan motor family rather than being limited to a small number of models.
- Speed control and communication
An EC fan motor is often part of a larger control system rather than a standalone motor.
Volcano Electric EC fan motors include 0–10V analog speed regulation and RS485/Modbus communication. The disc-type HSE300 and HSE370 also support RS485 Modbus EtherCAT and Wi-Fi.
The control functions provide several practical options.
Variable-speed operation
Fan shaft power is approximately proportional to the cube of rotational speed. At 70% speed the theoretical shaft-power requirement is about 34% of the requirement at full speed assuming the same fan system conditions.
This allows the fan to operate closer to the actual airflow requirement instead of relying only on full-speed operation.
Integration with control systems
Through RS485/Modbus the motor can be connected to systems used for climate control building automation or data-center monitoring. Speed can then be adjusted according to operating parameters such as temperature humidity pressure difference or CO₂ concentration.
Operating data and fault information
The motor can provide information such as speed current DC-bus voltage driver temperature and fault codes. These data points can also support basic condition monitoring.
The integrated driver includes protection functions for over-voltage under-voltage over-current and phase loss. Because the driver is integrated into the motor system an external VFD is not required for these functions.
- Options for non-standard voltage and temperature conditions
Standard products are designed around standard operating conditions. Some projects however involve site constraints that require a different configuration.
For 220VAC installations Volcano Electric offers 220VAC models including four inner-rotor HSE160 models and the HSE102 outer-rotor range.
The disc-type HSE300 and HSE370 accept input up to 480VAC which provides an option for higher-voltage sites and export projects. The outer-rotor range can also be customized with voltage tolerance up to +30%.
Temperature is another area where the standard configuration may not be enough.
The standard operating ambient temperature is -25°C to +60°C using Class F insulation with a 155°C temperature limit according to IEC 60085.
For environments in the 80–85°C range Volcano Electric offers a customized configuration based on four measures
- Class H insulation with a 180°C temperature limit
- Higher-grade heat-resistant magnet material
- High-temperature bearing grease with C3/C4 clearance
- A driver installed separately outside the high-temperature area
These changes are used together rather than treating insulation alone as the solution. The final configuration is selected according to the actual operating conditions.
- Two manufacturing bases
Volcano Electric operates two manufacturing bases.
The Ningbo base is located at No. 388 Mingguang Road Shounan Industrial Zone Ningbo.
The Jinhua base is located at No. 88 Zixi Village Nanshi Street Dongyang Jinhua.
The company’s headquarters is at AUX Central Tower South Business District Ningbo.
For motor manufacturing production capability matters alongside product design. Having manufacturing bases supports the process from electromagnetic design through production and testing rather than relying solely on external assembly.
- Matching the motor to the application
The useful way to look at the product range is to start with the application requirements.
For high-power EC fan applications the disc-type HSE370 reaches 22kW.
For washdown environments such as livestock cold-chain and food applications the HSE140 and HSE160 provide IP66 inner-rotor options.
For applications where motor efficiency is important the EC fan motor range is rated IE5.
For control-system integration 0–10V and RS485/Modbus are available with additional protocols on the HSE300 and HSE370.
For sites with 220V power higher-voltage requirements or high ambient temperatures corresponding models and customized configurations are available.
For customers looking to source across a broad power range Volcano Electric covers 0.4kW to 22kW through three structures and seven series.
