Energy Savings Calculator
See what you would save by replacing a fixed-speed motor driven by a damper or throttling valve with a Volcano Electric IE5 permanent-magnet (PMSM) motor and drive. Adjust the inputs — results update instantly.
- IE5 Ultra-Premium efficiency class
- 0.4–110 kW EC fan motors & PMSM range
- IEC 60034-30-1 Standards-based calculation
Technical assumptions, methodology & sources
Baseline (your current system)
- Direct-on-line induction motor, 4-pole, 50 Hz.
- Nominal efficiencies per IEC 60034-30-1 Table 1 (IE1–IE4). China: GB 18613-2020 Grade 3 = IE3, Grade 2 = IE4, Grade 1 = IE5.
- Flow regulated by outlet damper (fan) or throttling valve (pump); part-flow power multipliers follow the published ABB FanSave / PumpSave control curves, originating from Westinghouse Bulletin B-851.
Upgrade (Volcano Electric)
- IE5 nominal efficiencies per IEC 60034-30-1 Ed. 2.0 (2025) / IEC TS 60034-30-2, cross-checked against GB 18613-2020 Grade 1.
- Speed control instead of throttling; shaft power follows the affinity laws (P ∝ n³) for systems with negligible static head.
- Drive efficiency from the US DOE part-load drive efficiency table (97% at full load, 95% at 50% load).
- ≤22 kW fan duty is served by the integrated HSE EC fan motor (motor + drive in one unit, IE5, IP54–IP66); above that by an HSI IE5 PMSM plus an HS-series FOC drive.
Financial & environmental factors
- Payback is simple (undiscounted): installed upgrade cost ÷ annual electricity cost saving. It excludes maintenance, power-factor and downtime benefits, and excludes any energy-efficiency subsidy.
- Default installed cost scales with motor size and is an industry-typical figure — always overwrite it with a real quotation.
- CO₂ factors: China 0.5306 kg/kWh (MEE & NBS, 2023 data, published 2025); EU-27 0.1834 (EEA, 2024); USA 0.3480 (EPA eGRID 2023); world 0.458 (Ember, 2025).
- Equivalences: 22 kg CO₂ absorbed per mature tree per year (European Commission, SWD(2021) 651); 2,300 kWh per electric car per year (ODYSSEE-MURE 10,800 km/yr at 21 kWh/100 km).
